The holiday season can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. With these tips, you can make sure your Thanksgiving is relaxing and fun.

Start Early

Decide who you want to invite early. That way, you’ll give Cousin Mike who lives in Michigan enough time to make travel plans, and you’ll avoid forgetting to call Great Aunt Lisa at the last minute. You’ll need to know who is coming anyway, so you can buy the appropriate amount of food and enlist any extra help you’ll need. The grocery stores will be packed and struggling to keep their inventories stocked. Get what you need early to avoid a last minute scramble.

 

Cook Ahead

You already know that there will be mountains of food. You already know there will be pressure. Save yourself the hassle and prepare as much food as possible ahead of time. Vegetable dishes and casseroles do great in the freezer, and desserts don’t have to be fresh out of the oven to be delicious. Thanksgiving is about enjoying time with your family. Don’t miss out by spending all day cooking.

 

Don’t Do It Alone

Between invitations, cooking, place settings, cleaning up, and making sure you accommodate all of your guests, there is just too much to do alone. Have your sister bring over the stuffing, and ask your football player nephew to carry extra chairs into the dining room. Split up the dishes: one person can clear the table, another can wash, and another can dry. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, trust your family, and don’t micromanage. Your spouse is capable of buying the right ingredients at the grocery store, and though they may fight it, your kids can help with everything from keeping the kitchen neat to taking coats at the door.

 

Prepare Accommodations

Remember Mike from Michigan? It’s likely he won’t be traveling back home after your delicious Thanksgiving feast. Put sheets on your sofa bed, or blow up an air mattress ahead of time. Bring down those sleeping bags from the attic; you knew they’d be useful even after your kids stopped having sleepovers. By designating sleeping areas and making beds ahead of time, you’ll be able to relax after dinner and let the tryptophan take you away.

 

Try Something New

Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie are all there for a reason, but since this is your Thanksgiving, put your mark on it. Check out these great recipes for inspiration. If you usually do a sit-down dinner, make it a buffet. If you’re a football family, encourage everyone to wear their favorite jersey. Have fun.
